Review: Jena Faces Her Fears On “battleground”

Jena’s debut single, “battleground”, is about learning when to stop fighting. Blending soulful melodies with R&B influences, the song looks at fear, insecurity and the pressure to keep pushing when letting go might be the better choice.

The battle theme runs through the lyrics from the start. “I need to get my armour on / Tho’ I’m fighting all alone” introduces someone who feels ready to defend herself, while the repeated questions about winning suggest she is not sure that fighting is helping.

That changes in the second verse. “I need to learn to compromise / ‘Cause I’m waving my own flag of white” shows Jena beginning to see surrender differently. By the final verse, the change is complete: “So I’ll put my weapons down / Ceasefire, wear my own crown.” Instead of treating surrender as defeat, she sees it as a way to face her fears without constantly being on the defensive.

The chorus adds another side to the story, touching on moving forward through “shattered places” and “broken spaces” while trusting that she will be guided through the difficult parts. The lyrics keep the focus on personal struggles rather than trying to offer a big solution.

The closing lines, “I’ll defeat my fear with pride / And I will finally win on my battleground”, bring the song to a clear conclusion. After questioning how to face her fears throughout the track, Jena ends by choosing to face them rather than run from them.

As her first release under the name Jena, “battleground” sets out her direction clearly. It is a personal song about fear, acceptance and learning that putting your guard down does not mean giving up. For a debut, it makes a striking introduction and leaves Jena with plenty of room to build from here.
