One of the most uncomfortable ideas in montana chanel’s “ride or die” is also one of its most relatable: sometimes a situation can feel familiar precisely because it is unhealthy.

chanel addresses that idea openly, looking at her own attraction to relationships and environments that bring emotional highs and lows. The song does not present this as a problem that has already been solved. Instead, she sits with the contradiction of recognising a pattern while still wanting the person involved.

That is where the song finds its tension.

The relationship at the centre of “ride or die” had reached the point of a near breakup after a major argument, and chanel wrote the song during that period. Her response is not to turn the experience into a clean breakup narrative. She questions her own decisions, wonders whether the relationship is right for her and still expresses a desire to fight for it.

Those competing thoughts give the lyrics their character. Wanting someone and knowing they may not be good for you are treated as two feelings that can exist at the same time.

The music follows that idea. The movement between minor and major chords gives the song an audible sense of changing direction, while the brighter moments keep the track from becoming overly heavy. The chorus pushes the stirring question, “Are you my ride or die?”, to the front, then the verses bring the uncertainty back in.

Out now via Now Listen, “ride or die” is at its strongest when it refuses to separate love from doubt. chanel is not presenting herself as someone who has already worked out the answer. She is writing from the point where the decision to stay or walk away is still difficult, which makes the lyrics feel more personal and believable.
