Vancouver-based alt-soul artist Matt Storm delivers a masterful finale to his Spilt EP with the single “You Say This I Say That”. The track showcases Storm’s signature style – melding the introspective lyricism of classic soul with experimental alt-R&B and psych-rock influences. Co-produced with local talents Trent Otter and Luke Deville and mixed by Grammy Award-winner Ben Kane, the song exemplifies an aesthetic that feels both organic and expansive.

The lyrics explore the raw tension and cyclical patterns of a turbulent relationship: “You say this, and I say that / You get pissed, and I get mad”. Storm’s introspection reaches deeper as he confronts his own struggles, asking, “Will I always be this way? Will I always be this crazy?” These lines reflect his ability to connect personal conflict with universal emotion, making the song deeply relatable.

Musically, the track begins with a minimalist arrangement – a striking piano and vocals – before evolving into lush harmonies and a psychedelic instrumental section. A dynamic rhythm section drops in midway, adding weight and texture, embodying the emotional highs and lows of the narrative.

“You Say This I Say That” completes the Spilt EP, a project that signals a new era for Storm. Known for his genre-blending approach, he has been a staple in the Vancouver music scene since 2016, working with JUNO-nominated artists and touring globally. This single not only encapsulates the EP’s theme of vulnerability but also highlights Storm’s growth as an artist pushing boundaries in modern music.
