Every Friday brings another flood of new singles. Most arrive with a carefully packaged identity before anyone has even pressed play. The Songs of Butler & Cupples have taken a different route, and “Frequency” is another reminder that the project is more interested in the music than building a fixed image.

That approach gives the latest release its appeal. Instead of sticking to one recognisable sound, the duo let each song find its own direction. This openness keeps their sound feeling fresh and unpredictable. On “Frequency”, that means weaving together alternative pop, R&B and jazz influences without making the blend feel like the main event. The writing always stays front and centre.

The song explores the changing dynamics of connection within club culture, following the moments when people click and the moments when everything suddenly shifts. It’s a familiar experience but one that’s approached from a new perspective. Rather than spelling out every emotion, the arrangement carries much of the story, moving between warmth and uncertainty as the track unfolds.

In a crowded release schedule, originality often comes from decisions made long before the recording begins. “Frequency” benefits from that philosophy, offering a thoughtful, well-written single that easily leaves its own mark without needing to shout for attention.
